DIY panel: Fake News, recap & recs

Thanks to everyone who attended mine and sailorptah's DIY Fake News panel on Saturday!

Topics included:
- Jon's refreshing passion during interviews

- the fuzzy line between character!Stephen and real!Stephen, and the blending of fiction and reality across both shows and in the wider world of news and punditry

- the fandom's curious adoption of Keith Olbermann and Anderson Cooper

- how to write in a fandom with 4 new hours a week of pure crack (seriously - you name it, it's probably canon. Jon/John O? Canon. Mpreg? Canon. Alternate universes, time travel? Canon. Orgies? Oh yes, canon.)

By my lovely co-mod sailorptah, Expecting (the crackily plausible character!Stephen mpreg story!) and its sequel State of Grace, the fic that owns my soul and wherein Stephen begins to work on solving his many psychological issues. (I highly recommend all of her work in this fandom, actually!)

Fast Times at NAMBLA High is smilesawakeyou's high school AU, and it's utter crack of the best kind.

Also by smilesawakeyou (OMG, I FORGOT THIS WAS HERS!) To Serve Your Country, the Jon/Stephen/Condoleeza Rice that got infamously featured in the CCInsider blog! (Oh, while we're at it, I highly recommend all of smilesawakeyou's fic, too!)

sarken's lgbtfest fic, How Stephen Colbert Proved Jon Stewart Is a Lady - this is the one with the Pundits-Round-Table-with-"Stephen" scene!

In similar vein, The Strange and Not Entirely Ineffective Courting of Jon Stewart by Stephen T. Colbert, by sparky77, who was at the panel! :D (All the Yuletide stories under "RPF-Punditslash" and "Colbert Report" are excellent, too!)


Many of the best authors in this fandom are becoming increasingly paranoid about posting publicly. I hope the pendulum will eventually start to swing back the other way, but for now, a lot of the stories are friendslocked to the fakenews_fanfic and/or tds_rps communities (which I suggest joining just on general principles if you enjoy this fandom). Some authors also post flocked to personal journals, and will usually have no problem friending people if asked. I recommend that you at least ask insomniacures to add you, for the "Stephen"/John Oliver stories we mentioned at the panel, plus assorted cracky AUs and general hotness!

Hell of a Cargo (the pirate AU) by lucia_tanaka is comm-flocked.

The Virtuous Love Affair, one of the best Jon/Stephen stories out there, by nm_317 and verbgirl, is comm-flocked and spread across both communities.

Beginner's Love by verbgirl is Stephen/Anderson and Jon/Stephen/Anderson - also comm-flocked and spanning both communities.
